Tired of Your Circumstances Running Your Life?

How is it two siblings raised under the same roof can have such massively different lives? One becomes very successful, the other not.

My doctor referred me to a phycologist because he thought I may be suffering from depression. I went. I told her about my family. The lineage of alcoholism, the drug use in my home growing up, the domestic abuse and volatile fights among my parents and much older sibling (22 years). I told her about my aunts and uncles who died early because of addictions, and how no one before me had gone to college. I told her specifics instances of one thing or another. Each story her eyes widened a little bit.

Yet I was full of hope for my future, I had big plans and determination. I wasn’t on drugs and not dependent on booze. I had a good outlook on what life was and how my future could be.

She stopped me about halfway through our session and said, “You are NOT depressed. And I don’t know why you aren’t like the rest of your family, because you should be.” (BTW, I have a thyroid disorder that can present as depression if the meds are off. Here’s a link to the symptoms if you are curious.)

You are not your circumstances!

Within all of us is the power to become 100% in control of our lives. When you accept responsibility for the results that you have in life, you will then be able to create the results that you want.

This is not to say that shitty things don’t happen to us, that some of us have bigger hurdles to overcome or that addictions don’t happen. Things happen, but the important part- the part that YOU are in charge of- is how you react to whats going on.

You can choose to use it as an excuse as to why you have what you have, or why you don’t have what you want. Or you can use it to flame your dream and ambitions into reality.

You can plant your flag in the ground and proclaim that you WILL get through this hardship because what’s on the other side is more important than what’s happening right now.

“Responsibility” has gotten a bad rep. It’s something we were told over and over again growing up to, “Take responsibility for your actions,” whenever we did something wrong. Most people have a parallel connection to bad/wrong tied to responsibility.

Here’s the thing though, if we don’t claim responsibility of our actions, results, feelings and circumstances, then we will never be able to change them. That’s when we become a slave to them.

Yet if we view life as if we are responsible for them, then a whole world of possibilities emerge. Suddenly we’re able to mold and shape our surroundings, our circle of influence, our careers, our businesses, our relationships- our lives.

Put it into action:

  1. Write a list of things that you are not satisfied with in your life
  2. Pick 1–3 that you want to see change right away
  3. Get a clean piece of paper for each one. Write the item at the top of the paper
  4. In the middle of the paper, write your desired outcome and circle it. (example: if you are unsatisfied with your car, write the make/model of the car that you want in the middle.)
  5. Now brainstorm ALL of the ways that you could go about having the thing that you want. No idea is a stupid idea. Write ALL of them down (I once listed “bake sale” on one of these)
  6. When you’ve exhausted all ideas, pick one and DO IT!
  7. Keep going until you’ve reached your goal.
